We are pleased to invite you to a lunchtime presentation by Roberto Kirchheim, Guarani Project Task Manager at the OAS.   Mr. Kirchheim will be discussing the sustainability of ground water resources, as illustrated by the Guarani Aquifer project.  This aquifer system is one of the largest groundwater basins of the world, situated in the southern part of Latin America, and shared by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Roberto Kirchheim joined OAS/USDE in Montevideo, Uruguay, as a consultant for the technical preparation of the Guarani Aquifer Project.  In August 2001, he transferred to Washington to serve as task manager for the Project for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development of the Guarani Aquifer System, and for the Dutch Grant for Transboundary Research and Management.

He started his career as an environmental and water resources consultant dealing with urban development, restoration of  contaminated sites (heavy metal and hydrocarbonates), and water master plans in Brazil.  His international experience began in Mozambique, where he worked as a field engineer and water specialist with international NGOs, building and training village water teams, constructing hand dug wells and tubular wells, and doing maintenance of water supply schemes and hand pumps.  He also worked as a field geologist for private consulting companies in Germany.

Roberto Kirchheim received his undergraduate degree in geology from the Federal University of the Rio Grande do Sul (UFGRS), Brazil.  He holds two Masters degrees--one in Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology of the Tropics and Subtropics, from the Karl Eberhardt Universitat in Tubingen, Germany; and one in Water Resources Management/ mathematical modelling, from the Institute for Hydraulic Research (IPH), UFRGS, Brazil.
