On December 23, 2003, the UN General
Assembly passed a resolution proclaiming the years 2005 to 2015 as
the "International Decade for Action, 'Water for Life.'" We are
most pleased to invite you to a timely presentation by Ambassador
John McDonald, who served as US Coordinator during the previous UN
Decade on Drinking Water and Sanitation in the 1980's, and who
will discuss "The Second UN Water Decade: Next Steps."
Ambassador McDonald is a distinguished diplomat, professor,
lawyer, development expert, and peacebuilder. Currently he is
Chairman and co-founder of the Institute for Multi-Track
Diplomacy, in Washington D.C., which focuses on national and
international ethnic conflicts (http://www.imtd.org <http://www.imtd.org>
). Following 40 years in the Foreign Service, he taught and
lectured at the George Mason University's Institute for Conflict
Analysis and Resolution; the George Washington University Law
School; Grinnell College (where he was President of the Iowa Peace
Institute), and at the Foreign Service Institute and the Center
for the Study of Foreign Affairs. He has written or edited eight
books on negotiation and conflict resolution.
During his career at the State Department, Ambassador McDonald
was the Coordinator of Multilateral Affairs, in the Center for the
Study of Foreign Affairs, from 1983-87. From 1978-83, he carried
out a wide variety of State Department assignments in multilateral
diplomacy. He was Deputy Director General of the International
Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland from 1974-78, and
from 1947-1974, he held various State Department assignments in
Berlin, Frankfurt, Bonn, Paris, Washington D.C., Ankara, Tehran,
Karachi, and Cairo.
Ambassador McDonald holds both a B.A. and a J.D. degree from the
University of Illinois, and he graduated from the National War
College in 1967. He was appointed Ambassador twice by President
Carter and twice by President Reagan to represent the US at UN
World Conferences
